Department: Lumber Yard Operations

Reports To: Yard Foreman

Position Type: Full-Time | Hourly | Non-Exempt

About This Role

Goodro Lumber has served Middlebury and the surrounding Addison County community since 1930. We are a locally owned, independent building materials supplier with deep roots in the trades. The Materials Handler is an essential member of our yard team, keeping our operations running smoothly and our customers and drivers moving efficiently. This role has a strong focus on building and staging delivery loads, so precision, safety, and a sense of urgency are essential. This is a physical, outdoor role that rewards reliability, attention to detail, and genuine pride in doing things right.

What You’ll Do

  • Build and stage loads for delivery with a high degree of accuracy, working in an error-free manner
  • Load delivery trucks efficiently so drivers leave the yard on time and ready to run their routes
  • Learn and apply safe load-building techniques using appropriate equipment (corner guards, stickers, wraps, etc.)
  • Stage loads with sound judgment around weight distribution, safety, truck payload capacity, and the order of scheduled stops along the delivery route
  • Stage and pull customer and contractor orders, preparing loads accurately and on schedule
  • Assist drivers in loading delivery trucks, confirming loads are secured safely and correctly
  • Unload incoming deliveries from vendors and manufacturers, verifying quantities and condition against purchase orders
  • Stock, organize, and maintain the lumber yard so that inventory is accessible, properly sorted, and easy to locate
  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other yard equipment safely and responsibly
  • Conduct regular inventory checks and flag discrepancies or damaged product to management
  • Keep the yard clean, safe, and presentable for customers and contractors visiting the site
  • Support the yard team across tasks as volume and priorities shift throughout the day

What We’re Looking For

  • Consistent, on-time attendance — this role is core to keeping trucks and drivers on schedule, and we need someone we can count on to show up
  • Open to feedback and coaching, with a willingness to adjust and improve
  • Comfortable communicating proactively — speaks up early when help, clarification, or more time is needed, rather than letting issues sit
  • Works with a sense of urgency and stays focused on efficiency, especially when building and staging loads
  • Strong attention to detail and able to work in an error-free manner when pulling, verifying, and staging orders
  • Able to work reliably outdoors year-round in Vermont weather conditions
  • Physically capable of lifting and handling heavy materials (60+ lbs regularly)
  • Forklift experience is a plus; willingness to get certified is required
  • Familiarity with lumber, building materials, or construction is helpful but not required
  • Dependable, punctual, and a team player who takes ownership of their work
  • Valid driver’s license preferred

Schedule & Compensation

  • Monday through Friday from 6:30AM to 4:30PM with 1-hour unpaid lunch
  • Hourly wage of $18 per hour and year-end bonus opportunity
  • Overtime paid at time-and-a-half
  • Minimum of 40 hours per week offered throughout non-peak season
  • Benefits package including health insurance and paid time off
